The QCF

What is the QCF?
This is a time of unprecedented change in the world of qualifications; work is well under way to populate the new Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) with significant repercussions for awarding bodies and learning providers alike.
The QCF is replacing the current National Qualifications Framework (NQF). It will in essence be a databank of units; each unit will be allocated credits (one credit per 10 hours of learning), and then units will be combined to create qualifications.
The QCF will allow learners to accumulate credit and give them greater flexibility as this credit can then contribute to overall qualifications. It will also usher in standardised naming for qualifications to bring consistency and clarity to the new framework. The names will be determined by a qualification’s size:
- An Award will be 1 to 12 credits
- A Certificate will be 13 to 36 credits
- A Diploma will be 37 credits and above
Currently all CYQ qualifications are accredited onto the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). By the target date of December 2010, these will be replaced by those on the QCF. For more extensive information click here to visit the QCDA website or watch the interactive video below.
