NVQ in Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise in the context of Gym or Group Exercise

This qualification is relevant for candidates who wish to run advanced sessions in gym or group exercise. It is delivered and assessed in the workplace.

Candidates will learn:

  • Exercise and Fitness Knowledge covering:
    -bones and joints
    -muscles and muscle actions
    -cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous/endocrine systems
    -components of fitness
    -principles of training
    -models of behaviour change
  • Basic principles of Gym-Based or Group Exercise
  • How to plan, teach and evaluate a session
  • How to progress a programme of exercises
  • How to motivate and support clients

Structure

*Candidates are required to complete all of the mandatory units to achieve the full NVQ. Optional units may be completed to broaden a candidate's skills.

There are no formal prerequisites for this qualification.
Assessment

Candidates are required to build a portfolio of evidence to meet the performance criteria listed in all the mandatory units.
