Students to benefit from awarding body partnership

Students undertaking Edexcel’s Level 3 BTEC Nationals in Sport and Exercise Sciences or Central YMCA Qualifications (CYQ) Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing qualification are set to benefit from an agreement between the two awarding bodies to mutually recognise prior achievement.

The move offers students the potential to qualify more quickly by avoiding duplication of learning and, for BTEC students, gain a health and fitness industry recognised qualification as part of their BTEC, thereby improving their employment opportunities in theis sector.

Colleges and training providers of both awarding bodies will also be able to offer more flexible learning routes and reduced delivery times.

Students achieving passes in the right combination of units of the Level 3 BTEC Nationals in Sport and Exercise Sciences need only undertake the practical assessment for the CYQ Level 2 qualification, bypassing the exercise and fitness knowledge theory assessment. Conversely, CYQ candidates can use their theory assessment achievement as evidence towards Level 3 BTEC Nationals.

This agreement between Edexcel, the UK’s largest awarding body and CYQ, the UK’s leading health and fitness specialist awarding body, will potentially benefit a significant number of students. Nearly 5000 learners achieved the CYQ Level 2 Exercise and Fitness Knowledge qualification with over 3,000 gaining a Level 3 BTEC National in Sport and Exercise Sciences in the past 12 months.
